Worrrrddd. Now, say it DEtroit style with your arms crossed, leaning back and making duck lips. Word.
🙂 I want to share a few reasons why spending time in the word is beneficial, VITAL, to anyone who is a Christ follower.
transformation: You’re being transformed daily, so the question is, what is transforming you? Is it Facebook, tv, music, co-workers, friends, family etc? Is it the books, blogs or magazines you read? Is it the activities you participate in that keep your life busy and strapped for time? I’m not saying any of that is wrong in and of itself, but I want the primary influence in my life to be God, His word and the Holy Spirit. If I make time for everything else and don’t leave time for God, I will not be transformed by Him.
Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. (Rom. 12:2)
beliefs: No, I didn’t say go to the Bible with your beliefs and find a verse that will back it up. Go to the scripture and let God develop your belief system! It’s imperative in this day and age to know what you believe and why you believe it. There is no way to know that if you’re not spending time in the word. You say you’re against abortion because of your religious beliefs? Show me where in the bible you developed that belief from? You say one should get baptized? Where is that? There’s only one way to heaven? Show me.
Honor the Messiah as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. (1 Peter 3:15)
Proclaim the message; persist in it whether convenient or not; rebuke, correct, and encourage with great patience and teaching. For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear something new. They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths. But as for you, be serious about everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. (2 Timothy 4:2-5)
*encouragement: For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that we may have hope through endurance and through the encouragement from the Scriptures. Rom. 15:4
*conviction of sin: 2Tim. 3:16 (see below)
*Healing: He sent His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit. Psa 107:20
*life direction: You reveal the path of life to me; in Your presence is abundant joy; in Your right hand are eternal pleasures. Psa. 16:11
*following God: Help me stay on the path of Your commands, for I take pleasure in it. Psa.119:35
*hope: Because of the hope reserved for you in heaven. You have already heard about this hope in the message of truth, the gospel Col. 1:5
*understanding: Teach me, Lord, the meaning of Your statutes, and I will always keep them. Psa 119:33
To sum it up: All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17)
