What makes a parent happier than when their children are getting along, loving on each other and working together? Recently, two of our kiddos were sitting on the stairs playing legos for a long while. No tv. No computer. No ipods. Just playing, pretending, imagining and having fun. Blessed my lil’ ‘ol heart.
That scene came to mind when I was reading Philippians 2:1-4 this week for Bible Study. Paul was speaking to believers about how it ‘fulfills his joy’ to see them getting along, loving on each other and working together. I’m pretty sure it makes Jesus happy too! In fact, verse 2 in the NLT is worded like this, “Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another and working together with one mind and purpose.”
This passage starts with some questions – basically asking if being in Christ means anything to you, if you’ve found any love, encouragement, comfort/consolation, fellowship, compassion/affection/mercy – then make Paul (and Jesus) happy by living that out with those around you.
What kind of love is he talking about?
Roms 5:8 God proves His own love for us it while we were still sinners Christ died for us.
2 Thes. 2:16 Jesus and God, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace.
1 John 3:16 Love – He laid down His life for us.
1 John 4:9-10 God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His One and Only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
That’s some serious love ya’ll!
What kind of unity is he talking about?
Eph. 4:3 Diligently keeping the unity of the Spirit with the peace that binds.
What about affection or mercy?
Col. 3:12 Put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
That is the kind of LOVE/UNITY/AFFECTION we get from Jesus, now WE can fulfill His joy by thinking the same way.
Rom. 12:16 Be in agreement with one another. Do not be proud; instead, associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Do not repay evil for evil. Try to do what is honorable in everyone’s eyes.
Rom. 15:5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you agreement with one another… vs. 6 so that you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ with a united mind and voice.
That, my friends, is what it is ultimately all about. As stated in Rom. 15:6 – doing that will bring GLORY to GOD and Make Him Happy.
On this Valentine’s Day – think about His great love for you and share that love with those around you.
